Understanding Nerve and

Muscle Function for Better

Pain Management

If you’re experiencing unexplained numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or chronic pain in your arms, legs, or back, Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) can provide critical insights into what’s causing your discomfort. At Comprehensive Pain Management, we use these advanced diagnostic tools to assess nerve and muscle function, helping to pinpoint the root cause of pain, weakness, or nerve dysfunction so that the right treatment plan can be developed.

What Is Electromyography (EMG) & How Does It Help?

EMG is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of your muscles. Your nerves control your muscles through electrical signals, and when there’s a disruption—whether due to injury, compression, or an underlying medical condition—it can cause pain, weakness, or dysfunction. By evaluating these electrical impulses, EMG helps us determine whether your pain is originating from nerve damage, muscle disorders, or a problem within the spinal cord.

A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) is often performed alongside EMG. This test measures how quickly and efficiently your nerves send signals to different areas of your body. If there’s a delay or abnormal response, it could indicate nerve compression, neuropathy, or other nerve-related conditions that require targeted treatment.

Conditions Diagnosed with EMG & Nerve Conduction Studies

Many nerve and muscle conditions can cause chronic pain, weakness, or sensory issues. EMG and NCS help identify conditions such as:

Radiculopathy – A condition where spinal nerve roots are compressed or irritated, often causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.

Peripheral Neuropathy – Damage to the peripheral nerves, often linked to diabetes, infections, or autoimmune diseases, leading to tingling, burning pain, or loss of sensation.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – A common nerve compression disorder affecting the hands, leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness.

Sciatica – Compression of the sciatic nerve, causing pain that radiates down the back of the leg.

Muscle Disorders (Myopathies) – Conditions that weaken the muscles, such as muscular dystrophy or inflammatory muscle diseases.
