Dr. Schurgin has dedicated his professional career to providing care to patients with serious acute, subacute, and chronic pain conditions. His practice has been limited to Pain Management since 1993. Dr. Schurgin prides himself on a holistic approach to pain management, an osteopathic principal that was incorporated in his medical training at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Schurgin was ranked #1 academically in his class. After graduation from medical school, Dr. Schurgin spent 2 years in family practice and geriatric medicine before returning to Michigan to complete his residency in Anesthesiology. He completed his fellowship at the University of Southern California/LA County Medical center and was an Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine before becoming a resident in Arizona in 1988.
Since 1993, Dr. Schurgin has dedicated himself exclusively to the care of patients with serious pain problems. His emphasis is on reduction of pain and restoration of function. Dr. Schurgin utilizes a variety of modalities including Interventional Pain Management Techniques, Rehabilitative Care, Medical Management, Patient Counseling about exercise, life style, conditioning and emotional issues that may be impacting the rehabilitative process. Dr. Schurgin utilizes the skills of many other trained medical professionals including selected Physical Therapists, Orthopedic Specialists, Neurologists, Physiatrists, Neurosurgeons, and Osteopathic Manual Medicine Specialists to provide a truly Multidisciplinary approach to Pain Management, and has been doing so since the very beginning.
Dr. Schurgin has a special interest in the Pain and Rehabilitative Care of Injured Patients, with an emphasis on recovery of function. Dr. Schurgin is one of the few Interventional Pain Management Specialists in Arizona with board certification from the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner. Dr. Schurgin provides expert services in areas related to Injury, Pain Management and Impairment.
Dr. Schurgin prides himself on tailoring the treatment plan to the individual need of each patient. Dr. Schurgin is a member of the local music scene. As a guitarist in The Rockin’ Docs and Crosstown Traffic, Dr. Schurgin has helped to raise several million dollars for local charities by providing the musical entertainment for large charitable events for such organizations as the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, AIDS Foundation, and Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research. Dr. Schurgin remains active in the music scene in the instrumental Surf Band, Los Huevos.
